iPhone Refurbished Market Share Reaches 49% | Apple CarPlay Supports Over 800 Car Models#
iPhone Refurbished Market Share
According to Counterpoint Research, Apple's refurbished iPhone sales increased by 16% last year, with market share rising from 44% in 2021 to 49%. Samsung remains in second place, with market share dropping from 28% in the previous year to 26%.
In 2022, India became the largest refurbished iPhone market, while refurbished iPhone sales in China declined by 17%. Market tracking data shows that the supply of refurbished devices in most emerging markets is limited, and consumers are more willing to purchase and use new smartphones for a longer period of time.
Counterpoint believes that the increase in demand for lower-priced refurbished smartphones in the global smartphone market in 2022 was influenced by rising component prices and inflation.
One of the reasons why refurbished iPhones continue to be popular is that Apple provides a one-year full warranty policy and supports the purchase of AppleCare+ services.
In addition, Apple equips all refurbished iPhones with new batteries, casings, and brand-new USB-C to Lightning cables, so these refurbished phones have almost no difference in appearance and performance compared to new iPhones. Furthermore, Apple refurbished iPhones are unlocked and can be used with any carrier.
From the Apple US website, the refurbished iPhone models available in the Apple Store include four models from the iPhone 13 series, four models from the iPhone 12 series, and the iPhone 11. However, the only available model currently is the iPhone 12 Pro Max, priced at $1009 for the 512GB version (original price $1299).
Unfortunately, Apple has not officially launched refurbished iPhones in China, and currently, only certain models of iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches are available as refurbished products.
Apple CarPlay Supports Over 800 Car Models
Apple recently updated its CarPlay webpage on its official website, and CarPlay now supports over 800 car models (the Chinese official website has not been updated yet).
Until last week, the page still showed that CarPlay was available for over 600 car models. As part of the update, Apple added many 2023 and 2024 car models to the list.
Previously, General Motors announced plans to gradually phase out CarPlay in its future electric vehicles to support its own in-car software platform developed in collaboration with Google. Given the popularity of CarPlay, this decision has sparked strong opposition from some customers. However, General Motors emphasized this plan in an interview with The Verge last week, stating that they are building a "comprehensive integrated" operating system with "greatly improved navigation and charging experience for future electric vehicle owners."
At WWDC22 last year, Apple stated that 79% of US buyers only consider cars compatible with CarPlay and claimed that the platform is available for 98% of cars sold in the country. Apple bluntly stated that "CarPlay is an essential feature when buying a new car."
It is worth mentioning that the next generation of CarPlay demonstrated by Apple last year is expected to be launched later this year. The new CarPlay will support multiple displays on the dashboard, built-in climate control, FM radio applications, widgets, enhanced personalization, and more. Apple stated that the first batch of cars supporting the all-new CarPlay will be released later this year.
Apple CarPlay or the car's built-in infotainment system, which one do you prefer to use?
